🧒
papá, cuando se acaban los números?
kiddo (5) playing with calculator suddenly asks "dad, when do the numbers end?"
He just stood there in silence for a moment when I told him if he just kept counting the numbers would never end.

My 8 y.o. daughter a few hours ago (talking about the size of the Universe): "
But how do we know that infinite exists? I mean nobody went there to check, right? So how can we be sure?
".
How would you answer that?

Oof! That's a good one.
I'd probably just concede at that point. 😆
I suppose the conversation would switch to the topic of "how do we know" anything, being
reasonably certain
of something, and being able to accept and appreciate that we simply don't or can't know certain things.

I thought about doing that, but in the end I preferred trying to explain her that even if we didn't go there, we can actually see as far as the age of the Universe, because of the limited speed of light. I told her, that, as far as we know, and until proven wrong, we can say that we have not seen a wall at the edge of the visible universe, so we can safely assume it is infinite somehow.
Pretty sure I lost her at the speed of light or the age of the universe.
If she ever comes back with such a killer question, I might try the approach you suggested.

I'd opt for 'we have no clue whether infinity exists but assuming it does makes physicists and mathematicians jobs easier'...

I'll wait a few years for this one. Right now it would only bring new questions, like "
What does a mathematician actually do for a living, like for real?
" or even worse 🤪

That's easy to answer, they either teach maths to people who think math is useless in real life or go on to work in IT. 😋
